Pinguicula lutea Blooming
Family: Lentibulariaceae
Genus: Pinguicula – comprises more than 50 species
Common Name : Yellow Butterwort  French: Grassette jaune
Origin: Costal plains and hinterland.of the southeastern United States, from North Carolina , through Florida, to Louisiana.

Habitat:
The yellow butterwort grows in poor , often sandy soils or , damp, even swampy, areas where it is protected from direct sunlight.

Description:
Leaves vary with the age of the plant, generally around 2 inches when mature.   A mature plant will bear multiple flower stalks in the spring.  They range from 2 to 10 inches in height.  Each stalk bears one flower usually chrome-yellow in color.  Occasionally plants will have purple, pink, or white blooms.  Flowers range in size from 3/8 to one inch.  Seed matures approximately one month after being pollinated and should be refrigerated for at least two months before being sewn directly on top of damp peat.  New plants can also be produced by pulling the lower leaves off of the plant and placing them on damp sphagnum moss. Leaves must be kept damp in order to generate a new plant.

Cultivation:
Plants grow best in acidic soil with a ph of between 5 and 6.  Sphagnum being the best medium.  The plant must be kept moist at all times, and only slightly dryer in doormat periods.  Plants prefer light shade.  The plant is perennial and can survive outdoors through most winter conditions
Prey:
Prey is captured by a sticky substance secreted by glands on the surface of the leaf, where it is held in place and digested.  The principle prey is usually very small, such as midges, whiteflies, gnats, etc.
Pest and Diseases:
Fungus may be a problem with indoor cultivation.  This can be eliminated by spraying with a fungicide   P. lutea can be attacked by numerous insects (aphids, caterpillars), molluscs (snails, slugs) and by fungus.  Treat any symptoms with an Ortho product such as Orthene for insects and Daconil 2787 for fungus.
